
The Kanpur Metro’s underground section that just opened received an overwhelming response, with over 25,000 commuters riding the metro on its first day. This is a fivefold increase from the average daily ridership of 4,500-5,000. To celebrate the occasion, the UPMRC greeted the riders with flowers and cookies at some of the key stations.

Huge Crowd on Day One: Long Queues at Ticket Counters
Ticket counters at every station experienced long queues for the first time as people of all ages came out early in the morning to board the metro. The energy was high and passengers were very enthusiastic. Even public representatives like MPs and MLAs took part in the excitement and tried out the route.
Metro Train Frequency and Timings Between IIT and Kanpur Central
On Saturday, all 7 of the trains operated between IIT Kanpur, and Kanpur Central from 6 A.M. to 10 P.M. They all completed the 27 minute journey efficiently. Throughout the day, 123 round trips were made. While the terminal stations (IIT and Kanpur Central) had 2 minute stoppages, the intermediate stops had very brief halts of 20-30 seconds.
Most Crowded Section: Motijheel to Kanpur Central
The Motijheel to Kanpur Central section had the most passengers. As the first underground metro in the city, commuters were excited to experience the first underground metro tunnel. Many described it as a new form of travel. IIT, Kalyanpur, University, Motijheel, Chunniganj, and Parade were key boarding points with passengers traveling both directions to and from Kanpur Central.
Relief from Heat: Underground AC Metro Offers Comfort
With humidity soaring and summer heat blistering, it was so comforting for commuters to travel via the underground metro stations. Unlike other modes of transport, the underground metro provided a refreshing atmosphere that was free from dust and dirt. As a result, many riders deemed it the much-needed innovation of the city’s public transport system.
Local Culture Reflected in Station Designs
Awasthi Ramesh, the MP, MLA Surendra Maithani and several other local BJP leaders traveled on the metro from Chunniganj to Kanpur Central. He also noted how the travel time from IIT to Kanpur Central is now under half an hour, which is a drastic improvement. Since the interiors of the stations are themed around culture and heritage, he appreciated that too.
Kanpur Metro Starts New Pink E-Rickshaw and E-Auto Services Exclusively for Women
To improve the first and last-mile connectivity, the Managing Director of UPMRC Sushil Kumar inaugurated the Pink Feeder Service at Chunniganj Metro Station. This offer consists of women-operated E-Rickshaws and E-Autos available at all metro stations. The initiative seeks to provide dependable and safe transportation for female passengers from metro stations to other locations using Ajigo ride-sharing app.
What Is Next for Kanpur Metro?
Following the successful inauguration of the underground corridor, Kanpur Metro is poised to become a model urban transit system. Feedback from the citizens has shown immense enthusiasm and acceptance for a metro system which serves not only key areas but also provides comfort, efficiency, and safety.
