In 2017, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) planned three rapid rail transit system (RRTS) corridors to link remote parts of the National Capital Region (NCR) with Delhi. These corridors are Delhi-Meerut, Delhi-Panipat, and Delhi-Alwar. The Ghaziabad will be passed through by the Delhi-Meerut corridor at a speed of 160 kilometers per hour. On October 20, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened a 17-kilometer stretch of the 82.15-kilometer Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). This section connects Sahibabad and Duhai in Ghaziabad is now open for passengers. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has also been reported saying that ‘Namo Bharat’ will be called the trains operating on RRTS.
The groundwork for the project began in March 2019 and during the Union Budget 2023-24, Rs 3,596 crore was allocated by the government for the Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor. The National Capital Area Transport Corporation (NCRTC) oversees the project. By June 2025, it is expected that the entire route between Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut totals up to 82 kilometers should be completed.
According to NCRTC work towards Meerut is set to progress once the priority section of about 17 km between Sahibabad and Duhai in Ghaziabad got opened in June this year. An RRTS segment from Sahibabad to Meerut (South) measuring around 42 kilometers has already been completed. The upcoming Duhai-Meerut (South) section will have four stations – Muradnagar, Modinagar (North), Modinagar (South) in Ghaziabad as well as Meerut (North) and Meerut (South) stations.
