Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway Opening Date, Route Map, and Travel Time

Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway

Commuting between Lucknow and Kanpur is about to get a major upgrade. The Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway, a significant infrastructure project by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), is almost ready. According to official reports, nearly 80% of the construction work is already completed. The expressway is expected to be fully functional by June 2025, although some sources hint that it could open even earlier, possibly by April or May 2025.

Once operational, this high-speed corridor will cut down travel time between Lucknow and Kanpur to just 35–40 minutes, a massive improvement from the current 2–3 hour journey. This will not only save time but also reduce fuel consumption and boost regional business and logistics.

Can You Ride a Bike on the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway?

A common question circulating on social media is whether two-wheelers, especially motorcycles, will be allowed on this new expressway. Historically, NHAI has not permitted bike travel on its expressways due to safety concerns. On the other hand, some state-managed expressways in Uttar Pradesh — such as the Purvanchal and Bundelkhand Expressways — do allow bikes, as they are governed by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA).

As of now, there has been no official confirmation from NHAI regarding two-wheeler access on the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway. With no mention of motorcycles in the latest speed regulations, it’s likely that bikes may not be permitted.

Speed Limits on the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway

NHAI has recently released guidelines on speed limits for vehicles using this new expressway. Cars and other light vehicles will be allowed to travel at a top speed of 120 km/h, while heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses will be restricted to 80 km/h. However, there has been no mention of speed limits for motorcycles, further suggesting that two-wheelers may not be part of the expressway’s vehicle mix.

Project Highlights: Route, Design & Investment Details

The total length of the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway is 63 kilometers. Designed as a 6-lane access-controlled expressway, the route begins at Shaheed Path in Lucknow and ends at Azad Chowk in Unnao, providing seamless connectivity between the two major cities. There are also future plans to expand the road to 8 lanes to accommodate rising traffic volumes.

A key feature of the project is an 18-kilometer elevated stretch, aimed at reducing congestion and easing access in urban areas. The remaining 45 kilometers will follow a greenfield alignment — a new route built entirely on undeveloped land. The project is being built at an estimated cost of ₹4,700 crore.

Why the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway Matters

The expressway is set to be a game-changer for Uttar Pradesh’s infrastructure and economy. Apart from reducing travel time, it will help in:

  • Lowering fuel expenses for daily commuters and transporters

  • Enhancing trade and logistics between two key cities

  • Promoting regional development by improving connectivity

  • Decongesting existing highways and arterial roads

As the project nears its final phase, it’s being closely watched by both commuters and businesses for its potential to transform travel and commerce in the region.
