Great news for those traveling between Ahmedabad in Gujarat and Mumbai! The journey time between the two cities will be shorter from August 15. While trains on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route at present run at 130 kmph, this speed will be increased to 160 kmph from August 15, said Western Railway. Trains such as Vande Bharat, Shatabdi, IRCTC Tejas, Double Decker and Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani fall under this route. The work plan for this upgrade has been finalized by the railway administration with June 30 set as the deadline.
Vande Bharat Speed Details
Trains will run at a speed of 160 km per hour between Virar and Surat on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route to Ahmedabad. Between Mumbai Central and Borivali, it will be 100 kmph while between Borivali and Virar it will be 110 kmph. Earlier Western Railway had planned to increase the speed of trains between major cities under the Mission Raftaar initiative. After the inspection and approval of the CRS (Commissioner of Railway Safety) in July 2024, speeds can be operated officially.
June 30 Deadline
Western Railway has completed several activities across the entire route to increase train speeds. Technological improvements have been made along with advanced Overhead Equipment (OHE) above tracks. Besides Kavach technology has been implemented. Divisional Railway Managers (DRMs) have been directed by Railway Board to complete all pending works before June 30 including necessary track blocks. Major infrastructure improvements so far include barricade fencing on a 565 km track, track upgrading & signaling improvement on 126 railway bridges & overhead wire installation, etc.
Travel Time Reduction
With the increase in train speeds from the current maximum of 130 kmph to 160 kmph,the travel time for Vande Bharat Express shall reduce from 5 hours 25 min to 4 hours 40 min. Similarly, the travel time for Shatabdi Express will reduce from 5 hours 50min to 4 hours 50 min. The travel time for IRCTC Tejas Express will be reduced from 6 hours 25min to 5 hours 50 min. Double Decker travel time shall be reduced from 6 hours 55 min to 6 hours 15 min and Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani travel time shall be reduced from 15 hours 32 min to 12 hours respectively, among others.
