Starting from Monday, people who use the highway will be charged more. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided that it will increase toll rates across India by 5% on average. Toll rates are revised every year on April 1, but this time they were postponed due to elections.
NHAI Apply New Toll Charges From 3rd June 2024
A senior NHAI official said on Sunday that the new toll rates would come into effect from the third of June. Changing their prices is an annual practice for them, bases it on CPI-based inflation changes determined through WPI (Wholesale Price Index). There are around 855 toll plazas on national highways where fees are collected under rules laid down in The National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008.
After this increase in charges imposed by them; people traveling between Delhi-Meerut would have to pay approximately eight rupees more for one side journey while those traveling between Ghaziabad-Aligarh should be ready with seven extra rupees at Luharli toll if we go by these figures.
Private companies are responsible for collecting tolls on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Eastern Peripheral Expressway, Delhi-Hapur Expressway, and Ghaziabad-Aligarh Highway. According to the contract, there is the provision of an annual increase but the authority to decide the rate lies with NHAI, not these companies.
At present light private vehicles pay Rs160 as a way toll from Delhi (Sarai Kale Khan) to Meerut which may increase up to Rs168 similarly light commercial vehicles (LCVs) pay Rs250 as a way toll from Delhi(Sarai Kale Khan )to Meerut which may increase upto Rs262. So also for a trip from Delhi(Sarai Kale Khan) to Hapur light, the private vehicle owners may have to pay Rs165 instead of earlier paying Rs173, LCV owners need to pay Rs265 instead of earlier paying Rs278 . At the Luharli toll between Ghaziabad and Aligarh private vehicle owners will have to pay Rs140 instead of earlier paying Rs147, NHAI officials said that the details about new rates will be known on 2nd June.
