Delhi Metro’s Pink Line Set to Become Longest Corridor with Maximum Interchanges

With the upcoming inauguration of the Majlis Park–Maujpur corridor this month, Delhi Metro’s Pink Line will achieve a new milestone. It will not only become the longest metro corridor at 71.6 km with 46 stations but will also have the highest number of interchange stations in the entire network—12 in total.

Current Status of Interchange Stations

Presently, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) network has 29 interchange stations. The Pink Line already has 10 such hubs at Azadpur, Netaji Subhas Place, Punjabi Bagh West, Rajouri Garden, Dilli Haat-INA, Lajpat Nagar, Mayur Vihar I, Anand Vihar ISBT, Karkardooma, and Welcome. With Majlis Park and Maujpur being added, the count will rise to 12, strengthening connectivity across the city.

How Other Metro Lines Compare

Among other corridors, the Blue Line and Yellow Line—considered the busiest—feature 10 and eight interchange stations, respectively. The Red Line, Delhi’s oldest, has four interchanges, while the shortest Grey Line, running 5.5 km from Dwarka to Dhansa Bus Stand, has only one.

Importance of Interchange Stations

Interchange stations serve as critical nodes in the network, allowing passengers to switch lines without exiting the system. According to a DMRC analysis conducted between October 2023 and March 2024, a significant portion of riders transfer between corridors. On average, only 20–30% of passengers complete their journey on the same line, while the majority switch to reach their destination.

Journey of the Pink Line’s Development

The Pink Line has been developed in multiple phases since 2018. The first section between Majlis Park and Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus opened in +0e to Form a Circular Route

The upcoming Majlis Park–Maujpur extension will complete the Pink Line, making it the first circular route in Delhi Metro’s network. This unique feature will significantly improve connectivity across north, west, south, and east Delhi, reducing travel times for daily commuters.

Phase IV to Add More Interchanges

Delhi Metro’s ongoing Phase IV expansion will further boost connectivity with 47 interchange stations in total once completed. The new Golden Line (Tughlaqabad–Aerocity) will have seven interchange stations, while the Janakpuri West–RK Ashram extension of the Magenta Line will add three more.

Future Triple Interchange Stations

Currently, Kashmere Gate is the only triple interchange station, linking the Red, Yellow, and Violet Lines. However, under Phase IV, Azadpur, Lajpat Nagar, and New Delhi stations will also become triple interchanges, enhancing flexibility for passengers.

New Corridors Under Phase IV

Apart from priority corridors, three new approved lines will extend the network further: Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block (Golden Line extension), Inderlok to Indraprastha (Green Line extension), and Rithala–Narela–Kundli (Red Line extension). Together, Phase IV will add about 112 km of new tracks to Delhi’s metro system.

First Phase IV Station Already Operational

The expansion is already underway, with Krishna Park Extension station on the Janakpuri West–RK Ashram line opened to passengers on January 5, 2024. As construction progresses, Delhi Metro is set to become one of the most connected and extensive urban rail networks in the world.
